the act of doing the action expressed by the root; or,
the manner in which the action expressed by the root is performed

luto’	cuisine, cooking	pagluto’	cooking
sulat	letter, writing	pagsulat	writing
alis	departure, leaving	pag-alis	leaving
dating	arrival, arriving	pagdating	arriving

Note: The root and the affixed word generally mean the same thing.

Mabagal ang lakad niya.

Mabagal ang paglakad niya.

He/she walks slowly.

Lit. His/her walking is slow.
